Ghost Lab Review and Ghost Hunters Spoof

Posted by Stephen J. Barron, Jr. in ,

Last night I caught up on my DVR episodes of Ghost Lab, Ghost Hunters, and South Park. Now you might not think that the ghost "reality" shows and South Park have anything in common, but... when the South Park creators spoof you it vaults you to super star status. That is what happened in Season 13 Episode One of South Park. Kyle's brother Ike begins to see dead celebrities and the TAPS is called in to help.

It was a great episode.

Now I also watched Ghost Labs who helped a great deal in giving us a comparison to Ghost Hunters right off the bat. While Ghost Lab did some work at the Shreveport Auditorium (where Elvis and John Cash got their start and often considered one of the birth places of Rock and Roll) they did an investigation at the Myrtles Plantation. Myrtles Plantation is considered by most the most Huanted Place in America. I think there are some other places that would argue that claim, but since TAPS and Ghost Lab both investigated the site I can render a good comparison.

I believe that TAPS (Ghost Hunters) wins round one hands down. While Ghost Lab is a little bit more scientific and a bit better in their debunking skills TAPS has a better style, organization and feel to the show. While Ghost Hunters can't compete with the HD and all the good sound quality of Ghost Lab, as one show is on SyFy and the other is on Discovery HD, I think Ghost Hunters got better footage and had a better when investigating the Myrtles Plantation.

Next week Ghost Labs goes to Tombstone (another place TAPS has been to investigate). We will see which team wins round two. Either way I prefer the Ghost Hunter's style of investigation. I respect the Ghost Lab team and appreciate anyone who does that type of work.

Now that Ghost Hunters is not the only kid on the block anymore in TV Ghost Hunting, it is clear they will now have to bring their "A Game" to future shows and investigations.

Ghost Lab

A new show about the scientific study of the paranormal is premiering today on the Discovery Channel. At 10 pm Ghost Lab takes to the air for a 13 episode run. I am excited to see this show and compare it to the Syfy Networks Show Ghost Hunters. The great thing about this show is it will be broadcast in HD so it should be great picture and sound. Syfy does not broadcast in HD so that gives Ghost Lab a bit of an edge on Ghost Hunters. However, we will see once the first few shows are on the books.

I think it is great that ghost stories, history, folklore, and science have teamed up in the era of reality TV to look into the possibility of life after death. Check out Ghost Lab tonight at 10 pm on Discovery and let me know what you all think.

Chernobyl Ghost Freatured

Posted by Stephen J. Barron, Jr. in , , ,

The SyFy cable television show Destination Truth did an episode last week on the Ghosts of Chernobyl. They did a paranormal investigation of the town.

You may recall that I did a post on Chernobyl as it is one of the greatest examples of a Modern Ruin. It also shows the potential outcome that a man made industrial disaster can have on a city that is moderately populated.

I did two posts on Chernobyl that can be read here.

The episode of this show that is the 4th episode in the 3rd Season on Destination Truth can be seen here.

I am not a big fan of the show and don't usually watch, but the best ghost hunters in the business today Jason and Grant from the SyFy show Ghost Hunters (one of my favorites) analyse the data collected from the site and believe to to be paranormal.

My opinion...

Well I would imagine in a horrible disaster like at Chernobyl there would be the potential for paranormal activity. However, determining if it s a ghost or haunt would be difficult. The high levels of radiation definitely taint any investigation here as one does not know how the scientific equipment used to detect ghosts reacts around such high levels of radiation. It is still a great episode and very relevant to stuff I have written about before.

Peter AB Widener on MySpace?

Posted by Stephen J. Barron, Jr. in , , ,

That is right Peter AB Widener apparently has a Myspace page. The Philadelphia Socialite died November 6, 1915. However, that has not stopped him from getting with the times.

I mean the cemetery his is buried in (Laurel Hill Cemetery) is the oldest cemetery in the US to continually take interments. It is considered a living sculpture garden, horticultural garden, and a unique historic resource.

They also must have the mausoleums wired for Internet.

Peter has a few famous friends. Most notably the owner of Peter's Estate's sister estate Whitemarsh Hall.

Eva Stotesbury also has a Myspace Page. It figures a socialite like her would be a fan of social networking.

The creators of these pages use some great pictures and really did a great deal of research into Peter and Eva. They should be commended. Check out the comments Eva left Peter. They are pretty funny.

Time Capsule Opened in Emmaus

Posted by Stephen J. Barron, Jr. in , ,

On March 2 of this year I blogged about a time capsule that would be opened August 16, 2009 to celebrate Emmaus' 250th Anniversary.

This time capsule was buried 50 years ago, and as you can see in the picture it was to be opened in 2009.

The capsule was opened as planned on the 16th. The local paper did a great article telling the story. Also the local news station covered the story. Emmaus also celebrated being named one of Money Magazines Top 100 Places to live. They ranked 88th.

As I have written before in articles about time capsules they are placed for the people to dig them up and learn about the life and times of the people who buried it. In this case it was a way for people to freeze a little part of 1959 for the future, and a time machine for people from 2009 to go back and see bits and pieces of 1959.

The opening was presided over by Terry Hart (former shuttle astronaut and PA native), who talked of the space race that was building and the mounting cold was with Russia in 1959. The contents of the time capsule were the usual with some nice surprises. News paper articles, pictures of town people as they were then. One person in attendance was 11 years old in a picture taken and placed in the capsule some 50 years ago. They were the sons of the Brothers of the Brush Club. Their fathers would grow beards for one year and be judged on who had the best one. Then they would shave them at the community gathering each summer after judging and start all over again for the next year. That contest in 1959 was won by Henry McClenahan.

One of the news paper articles highlighted the first lady Mamie Eisenhower on her 63rd birthday. Saying the years have been good to her.

The most touching story though has to do with Item #33 that was placed in the capsule all those years ago. It was a personal letter placed by Robert Wieand to his kids. He was given a receipt for Item #33 he carried around for 50 years transferring it from wallet to wallet. Several people came to collect their goods placed in the capsule all those years ago with similar tickets.

Robert's son (who has the same name) collected the letter they have been waiting 50 years to recover. The family now lives in Sunbury, PA. They would wait until they get home to open the letter. When you are talking 50 years what is a few more hours? Somethings should be private, and I guess this would clearly qualify.

Time capsules are a window to the past and they are fun to talk about. This one had some special surprises for the citizens of Emmaus. All of whom have a lot to celebrate in 2009.

Somethings I guess are worth the wait.

My Grandfather: The War Hero, Polar Explorer, and Academy Award Winner

Posted by Stephen J. Barron, Jr. in , , , , , ,

This is a picture of my grandfather (Joseph "Herbie" Michael Barron, Jr) and I during the Christmas of 1982. As those of you who read yesterday's blog you would know he died about 11 months later at a Penn State football game.

I also wrote about the three news articles that were clipped in the 40's and placed in the Veteran's Affairs Office as part of the county's WWII Archive. These articles gave me great insight into my grandfathers military service.

Two of the Articles I described. The 3rd article absolutely shocked me. This one article (that is very short) gave me information that helped me learn so much about my grandfather.

The Article Published in the Globe Times on December 5, 1946 read as follows:

Local Man with Byrd's Polar Expedition

Joseph Michael Barron, G.M. 3/C, son of Mrs. Helen Barron and the late Joseph Barron, 620 Buchanan Street, is aboard the U.S.S. Mount Olympus, Admiral Richard E. Byrd's Antarctic task force "High Jump" now headed for the Antarctic.

The task force will develop Naval techniques for establishing, supporting, and using bases under Polar conditions, consolidate and develop the results of previous expeditions and learn the effects of the frigid weather on personnel and fighting equipment.

After completing the expedition next May, Barron will receive his discharge, terminating his 3 1/2 year enlistment in the US Navy. The veteran of World War II has four major engagements to his credit and was aboard the USS Mount Olympus when the ship took part in signing the peace treaty in Japan.

This short article told me volumes about my grandfather and his military service. Starting with his ship. The USS Mount Olympus was an amphibious ship used for large scale operations when command or large amounts of troops needed to go ashore. During it's 4 major engagements during WWII the ship earned two battle stars, and was the afloat headquarters during the Battle of Leyte Gulf which rendered the Japanese Navy an ineffective force. The Japanese lost 10,000+ troops in the battle which effectively ended the war in the South Pacific.

The USS Mount Olympus was also one of the first US Navy ships to arrive in Japanese waters after the surrender of the country to the Allies. At the time there was the possibility that several Kamikaze planes and airmen were missing and could attack. My grandmother told me that of all the battles of WWI he was in the most tense and scared my grandfather ever was during the war was when they enter Japanese waters after the surrender. After Pearl Harbor, the US Navy put nothing past Japan.

Finally, on December 2nd (three days before the article in the Globe Times was printed) the USS Mount Olympus set off on the Admiral Byrd's legendary Antarctic Expedition known as Operation High Jump. The USS Mount Olympus met up with the Eastern, Central, and Western Groups after traveling through the Panama Canal crossing the equator and heading to the South Pole. The USS Mount Olympus was named the flagship for the operation and was the ship Secretary of the Navy James Forrestal, Admiral Nimitz, Admiral Krusen and Admiral Byrd all were part of the expedition and called the Mount Olympus home.

This operation was the topic of a documentary that was produced by the US Navy. I have watched the movie now twice, and I believe I can point my grandfather out once in the background. The movie won an Academy Award in 1948 for best documentary. It can be seen on google video and is about 70 minutes long.

The movie has stirred controversy since it was put out. Their was a period of time where Admiral Byrd disappeared for about 3 hours, and all the video footage from that time period was thrown out of the plane he was flying on. The pilot landed the plane on one engine (seen in the movie) and that was the explanation for the delay in his travels.

Conspiracy theorists believe that Operation High Jump was not a Naval cold weather equipment and personnel testing mission. They believe it was a mission to chase down Nazi's that left Germany to secret underground bases. They were allegedly continuing to develop the Vril flying discs and Thule, a mercury-powered spaceship prototype.

It is said Byrd met in those lost three hours met with Nazi scientists and SS Officers thought to be dead that brought these special weapons to their secret underground base. Some people even believe Hitler himself lived in South America and Antarctica to supervise his Nazi UFO program. Obviously, this has never been proven, but some folks believe these tests and programs were moved from Antarctica and placed at a secret military base known today as Area 51.

People even point out that Secretary of the Navy James Forrestal's untimely death at Bethesda Naval Hospital was part of the cover up of Operation High Jump.

Ultimately, on April 17, 1947 the USS Mount Olympus arrived back in the United States in Washington, DC. Sometime a few weeks later my grandfather was discharged from the Navy and working at the Bethlehem Steel.

This is a pretty amazing story of a man from Northampton County who enlisted 2/10/1944 to serve his county during a time of war.
